VESPERIA
Richard Bone
The four-movement Vesperia (2006) marked a major return to Bone's ambient roots. The first movement is the quintessential static, droning piece, although at the beginning it emits the quality of gregorian chants and then it subtly incorporates elements of Klaus Schulze's cosmic music and Harold Budd's sugary filigrees. The second movement is driven by a lulling melody that could have been lifted from a Mozart symphony and played at half speed. The fourth movement is a hypnotic blend of gently oscillating
drones, tidal electronic sighs, liquid piano notes and samples of an opera tenor. Bone's attempt at reiventing sacred music is not only inspired but also enlightening on the relationship between ancestral beliefs and modern music.
